DEFY Method FAQ's.

Of course! We accomodate members at all experience levels, however we are not Clinical Pilates. If you're injured, you may want to consult your health professional prior to attending a class.

If you haven’t done Pilates don't stress you'll pick it up quite quickly.

You will need to arrive to class 5 minutes prior to the class start time. Bring a water bottle and a positive mindset to help you achieve your physical and mental goals over the coming week.

Yes! This is just as important as the physical component and will ensure the you receive the best results. We’ve extensively researched this stuff – we know!

Nothing. We like to do exercise naked and bring nature into the studio. Actually some activewear would be more appropriate now that we’ve come to our 5 senses.

Both are about challenging the body, connecting the mind and using the breath. Pilates in general is more dynamic and offers equipment to increase or decrease the challenge of the overall experience. Both require mind movements, though Yoga includes a little more of a mindfulness and spiritual experience….which brings us to DEFY!

Static posture is the tip of the iceberg. Most people do not understand that posture is dynamic. Our posture needs to be continuously challenged to ensure all our motor patterns are kept in check. Pilates Reformer beds help to provide an environment that challenges all of our small and large muscle groups. With all muscles working in balance our dynamic and static posture improves immediately.

The Pilates Reformer bed is a traditional piece of Pilates equipment which looks like a bed with different weighted springs, a sliding carriage, ropes and pulleys. It was designed by Joseph Pilates himself.

  • Insulin sensitivity (which helps the exercising muscles more readily use glucose for fuel to make energy – this makes you burn calories faster)
  • Cholesterol profiles (ratio of low density lipids to higher density lipids)
  • Abdominal fat and body weight while maintaining muscle mass.

Pilates alone may or may not help you lose weight. However, research detailing a combination of methods such as Pilates, mindfulness and HIIT, has shown weight loss as a key benefit.

We offer a shower / change room, water fountain and, toilet facilities. Oh, we forgot about the awesome DEFY studio and the mind blowing experience of DEFY Pilates, HIIT and mindfulness all wrapped up in a 51 minute bundle.

It is advisable that you have attended fitness classes previously although you don’t have to be “fit”- though you will certainly improve all areas of body and mind ’s fitness by attending.

No. As classes are group and non-clinically based, we would recommend seeing a health professional to sign off on your attendance. You will need to sign a waiver, before you attend your first class.

No. At this stage we do not run women’s only classes.

Socks with a gripping or sticky sole are ideal but DEFY is OK with bare feet. Safety is our primary concern so you do not slip while working. Hygiene is taken care of in between classes with all floor and equipment cleaned where a DEFY-er has worked.

High intensity work is beneficial for adolescents through to adults. The minimum age of our DEFY-ers attendees is 14 years.

DEFY classes can accommodate 9 participants.

You can cancel online as well as book online. DEFY requires 8 hours notice of cancellation or the class will be charged as if you have attended.

High intensity training is a time efficient way of reaching better fitness goals quicker. Optimal physical training can be achieved with 3-4 classes per week. DEFY daily is the ultimate combination of looking after your physical and mindfulness fitness. Mindfulness should be practised every day for optimal results.

If you are pregnant or are considering pregnancy DEFY insists you discuss this with your treating doctor. Clinical Pilates is beneficial during pregnancy but the instructor needs to know you are pregnant and needs to have medical clearance from your doctor. DEFY Pilates is not clinical Pilates. DEFY incorporates HIIT (high intensity interval training) Pilates in its classes. HIIT Pilates is not recommended for pregnant women.

DEFY-ers feel the difference before they see a difference. After 3 sessions DEFY-ers report feeling stronger, fitter and more alert. Following this they report noticing better muscle tone, weight loss and are sometimes caught admiring themselves in their bedroom mirror whilst getting dressed.

Depending on your fitness level you may experience some soreness after your first class. DEFY leaves no muscle untouched in the body. HIIT (high intensity interval training) is quick in terms of time but long in terms of the muscles and areas of the body it targets.

DEFY style meditation is used in our mindfulness work. DEFY has researched the meditation practices of the ages and created a modern, contemporary and science backed technique. DEFY meditation and mindfulness is appropriate for the 21st century and delivers exceptional results on the back of time efficient high intensity interval training for the body.

Joseph died in 1967 aged 83. He was an innovator and general all round legend of the fitness industry. Contrology was his legacy, a program of 34 exercises for achieving fitness. Posthumously Contrology was named Pilates. The exercise form has been morphed in many directions since his passing but Google his life story. His values inspire DEFY and we look to pay that forward to you.

Meditation is the practice of clearing the mind to focus on cleansing itself to enable the individual to grow. Meditation enables you to focus on what really matters and let all the rubbish go.

Mindfulness is the skill of clearing the mind to be present in the moment without any disruptive thoughts. With a clear mind you can focus on what really matters and let all the rubbish go.

DEFY meditation is not religion based. Whilst meditation has been associated with various religious practices over the ages, DEFY meditation is research based, contemporary and appropriate for modern day life of the 21st century.
